Joe Dean, Jr. is in his 15th year as the Athletics Director at Birmingham-Southern. Dean was hired in June of 1999 and charged with directing Birmingham-Southern’s move to the NCAA Division I level, and now leads BSC into its third year of full NCAA Division III membership. Dean is a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and is very active in civic activities in Birmingham. He is the past President of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham and serves on the Board of Directors of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club and The Foundry. Dean and his wife, the former Ellen Anger, have been married for 37 years. They have two children, Scott (34), an LSU graduate, and the owner/operator of Momma Goldberg’s Deli in Birmingham, and Leslie O’Neal (31), a graduate of Auburn University and the Ole Miss Law School, currently working as an attorney in Marietta, GA., and two grandsons, Will and Jack Dean. Ellen is the Director of Recreation for Children at Asbury. She also directs all of Asbury’s Summer Activities and Camps for children. In addition, Ellen coordinates Asbury children’s soccer and basketball leagues.
Rev. Greg Foust serves as the Minister of Discipleship at Asbury and is an Ordained Deacon. He has been married to Cathy for 33 years, and has three young adult daughters. This year he became a proud grandparent. Greg has loved sports since his childhood on the ball fields at Wahouma Park in east Birmingham. Though not a gifted athlete, he became a fan of baseball, football and anything SEC. Greg is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and Asbury Theological Seminary. He has served in the North Alabama Conference for 34 years at Tuscumbia First, Gardendale – Mt. Vernon, Huffman and now at Asbury. Presently, Greg coordinates intentional faith development through Adult Sunday School, DISCIPLE and other Small Groups while assisting the Senior Pastor in congregational care and worship. Greg has a passion for spiritual growth and service.
Lori Moler, a Birmingham native, joined the staff of Children’s of Alabama in 1987 as Physician Relations Manager. She presently holds the position of Vice President of Customer Service. During her 26-year career at Children’s, Lori has been responsible for Children’s Behavioral Health, Strategic Business Development, and Corporate Communications and Marketing. Prior to joining Children’s, Lori was employed by Healthcare Services of America from 1983 to 1987. Lori earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Statistics from the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) in 1983. She added a Master of Science degree in Health Administration from UAB in 1990. Lori is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has served as President of its local affiliate, the Birmingham Regional Health Executive Forum (the Forum). She is also a member of the American Marketing Association, North Shelby-Inverness Rotary Club (President) and Shelby Women’s League. Lori is active with the Hoover Regional Chamber of Commerce (past Board President), serves on the Board of the Ronald McDonald House (Operations Chair), and is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Birmingham. Lori served as a United Way Loaned Executive in 1989, was a member of the 1998-1999 class of Project Corporate Leadership and the 2000-2001 class of Leadership Shelby County. Lori is a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She enjoys nature, Zumba Fitness and traveling.
Myra Shaw is the Director of Programs at Childcare Resources, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit United Way partner agency. Childcare Resources’ mission is to make quality child care and education happen by providing information, education and assistance to families, providers of child care and the community. Myra has been employed with Childcare Resources for 12 years. A little over two years ago, Myra and her family joined Asbury. Myra’s husband Lamar is an active member of the choir. They have been blessed with two children through adoption. Patrick (12) was recently confirmed and enjoys participating in youth activities. Emma (9) loves all the children’s Sunday night activities and actively participates in hand bells, choir, and Christ Adventures. The Shaw family resides in the Chelsea community.
Cary Guffey is a Certified Financial Planner who has been helping families and businesses with their financial questions for over 15 years. He and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Patrick and Griffin and have attended Asbury for the past 7 years. In that time, he has coached Upward Soccer, participated in Vacation Bible school, taught Sunday School, served on Finance and the Church Council, and somehow was a chaparon for 20 plus rising 7th graders for their Confirmation retreat.
Robyn White is currently serving as the Assistant Adult Discipleship Coordinator at Asbury. She is married to Dan White and they have two boys – Carson and Miles. Robyn is originally from Fairhope, AL but now calls Birmingham her home. She has attended Asbury for the past 8 years. During this time, she has led DISCIPLE classes, taught children and youth Sunday school, helped with VBS and the Women’s Ministry. Robyn loves to spend time with her family and friends.
Rea married his college sweetheart, Nancy, while in graduate school and they remain partners today after 34 years of marriage. They have three daughters; Stacy, Shannon and Sarah and each is blazing her own trail. Nancy works for Asbury part-time and also manages her own medical billing company. Rea and Nancy have been members at Asbury United Methodist Church for 14 years and Rea has served in multiple leadership capacities in the church including SPRC, ACT Ministry and as Asbury’s Lay Leader.
The lively discussions of the Faith and Current Events class will be led by longtime journalist and founding member of Asbury, Janet Hall O’Neil. Janet is an award winning anchor for WBRC-TV in Birmingham. She is a lifelong member of The United Methodist Church and has taught numerous adult Sunday School classes.
