Since 2014, Asbury has been working with Community Church Without Walls and Urban Ministry to help kids from B’ham’s West End prepare for the first day of school. From backpacks and uniforms to laptops and school supplies, donations from Asbury’s congregation and funds from Missions in Action pay for these essentials.
“Many times, students from impoverished families won’t go to school for a month or two because they just don’t have what they need,” says Minister of Discipleship Rev. Greg Foust. “It’s not because their parents are worthless or are expecting a handout; they’re working poor,” he says. “They just need help.”
On July 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., families are invited to join Pastor Greg at Community Church Without Walls to do two things: deliver supplies and visit with the recipients and their families. “Supplies are important but it’s the face-to-face interaction that really makes these students and their families feel loved,” says Pastor Greg.
This year, Asbury is committed to helping 130 children. One hundred will be helped on July 20 and Asbury’s Food Pantry will aid 30 more families throughout July and August. It costs $100 per child to pay for the clothes and supplies. Your donations are needed and very much appreciated!
