Do you and your child fight about cell phones? Well, you’re not alone. According to the Center for Parent Youth Understanding, 47% of parents think their children are addicted to their smartphone devices. And 50% are concerned that their child’s mobile device use is negatively affecting his/her mental health.
If you’re like me, you have a love/hate relationship with these devices. I love to be able to quickly get in touch with my family; I love having information at my fingertips; I love being able to get score updates during football games. However, there are things that are causing me great concern.
I found another article on CPYU.org that talked about just how dependent we ALL are on our cell phones. Consider these statistics: The average person checks their phones 110 times per day and 50% of us feel uneasy if we leave our phones at home. The average Millennials and GenZers spend at least six hours a day on their phones.
Further, I was listening to NPR a few weeks ago and they, too, were discussing the topic of adolescence and cell phone usage. The researcher was saying that too much time on a smart phone causes high anxiety in our kids. However, the study also showed that kids with no cell phones also showed a higher probability of having high anxiety. So what’s the answer?
Just like most things, smartphone technology is not good or bad. It all comes down to how we use our technology. I want to encourage you to be a leader in your home when it comes to managing technology. Do your best to make your phone an awesome tool, not a detrimental force.
