leader:  Cecilia Pierce

description: In the 14th volume of the That The World May Know ® film series, Biblical historian and teacher Ray Vander Laan guides viewers on Jesus’ path through Israel – while exploring the rule of ancient Rome – and reveals how God brought triumph in a world of chaos.

bio:  Cecilia is a native of Alabama and has been living in Birmingham for the past 18 years.  Originally from Tuscaloosa she attended the University of Alabama receiving her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction in 1990.  She taught in public High Schools for 20 years at which time she was named a Distinguished Teacher by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.  Upon receiving her doctorate she became an associate professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education where she taught for another 20 years, retiring in 2009.  While living in Tuscaloosa she taught Sunday School for grade 6, College and Youth, and Adults.  She has devoted her retirement to serving those in need throughout her community. She and her husband Michael have been married for 49 years and have a son, Scott who lives is Birmingham with his wife Jennifer, and a granddaughter, Mackenzie who is 11 year old.

description:  We’re going on a journey to the Middle East with teacher/historian Ray Vander Laan.  We will discover why Jesus turned the world upside down with his compelling call to follow him.  The Life & Ministry of the Messiah is Volume 3 in Vander Laan’s ‘Learning the Faith of Jesus’ series.

bio:  Robyn White is currently serving as the Adult Ministry Assistant at Asbury UMC.  She graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems.  She is married to Dan White and they have two boys – Carson and Miles.  Robyn is originally from Fairhope, AL but now calls Birmingham her home. She has attended Asbury for the past 9 years. During this time, she has led DISCIPLE classes, Journey classes, taught children and youth Sunday school, helped with VBS and the Women’s Ministry. She has a passion for learning scripture and enjoys leading people through God’s Word.

description: Do you find yourself constantly feeling busy, overwhelmed, and overscheduled? Do you both long to fulfill the seventh commandment, to rest on the Sabbath, and wonder how you could possibly pull it off? In this class, we will read about one family’s attempt to “try on” different ways of living Sabbath, and discuss how we may find or build “rest” in our own lives. This class is open to all adults.
